Alanya is a beautiful resort city that is known for its many magnificent beaches. It was formerly known as Alaiye, and it is located within the province of Antalya to the southern region of Turkey's coast. A moderately less populated city, Alanya is the heart of the tourism industry in the country because of its beautiful location within the Mediterranean region of Turkey.
Alanya has a convenient and strategic location on a moderately small peninsula overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the iconic Taurus Mountains. Its location has been a historical aid for most empires that have ruled the region, including the Ottoman, Byzantine, Ptolemaic, Roman, and Seleucid empires.
A key tourist hub of Turkey, Alanya prides in its lovely Mediterranean climate, beautiful and natural attractions along the Turkish Riviera, and deep historical heritage. Of the many beaches, the beautiful Cleopatra Beach takes the lead; it is wide and crowned with white sand and turquoise-blue waters. Numerous hotels, restaurants, and holiday homes line the vast area, and it is renowned for being the beach where the queen of Egypt reportedly swam in. Most water-related fun activities and competitions take place here, and it can be pretty crowded during peak seasons.
Several other tourist attractions include the Alanya Castle, an ancient fort that has since been converted into a museum to showcase the beautiful art and craft masterpieces of the city. Around the fort, the stunning view of the red-roofed tiled houses and villas that stretch back into the Ottoman Empire is a sight to behold. The iconic Red Tower dates back into 1226, and it remains a significant landmark for the city to date.
The harbor near Tersane remains a significant spot because of its vibrant nightlife and several bars and discotheques. During the day, there are numerous boats on the harbor, which visitors rent to cruise to the many nearby inlets and coves.
Other outdoor times are spent visiting the many museums, galleries, and memorial spots across the city, including the Alanya Archaeological Museum and the iconic memorial Ataturk House Museum, among others.

When to visit Alanya

Alanya enjoys a hot-summer Mediterranean climate of Köppen Csa, owing to its location within the Mediterranean Basin. This results in winters having most of the year's rainfall, leaving the summers long, very hot, and dry. Foggy mornings, rainbows, and snow on the peak of the Taurus Mountains are a common phenomenon even on hot days. Extremely cold days are a rare occurrence as winter temperatures seldom drop below the freezing point.
Summer has episodes of scorching temperatures of up to 33°C (91.4°F), but most days remain tolerable even under the circumstances. Thanks to the extended daylight hours, visitors get to tour the city up till late in the night.
Rainfall is very minimal during summer. The driest month is August, with an extremely low 2.7mm (0.1") reading in precipitation from an average of half a day. The wettest month is December, garnering a high 231.2mm (9.1") in the rain gauge.
The peak of the travel period in Alanya is between May and October, during the height of the beach-going time. The weather remains hot and favorable for all outdoor activities, although it gets exceptionally scorching between July and August as the temperature soars to the tune of 33.5°C (92.3°F)!
The International Tourism and Art Festival is one of the most attended events in Alanya, as is the Alanya Jazz Festival on select days between September and October.
