Edirne, known initially as Adrianople, is a city located in the province of Edirne to the northwest to Turkey. The town is beautifully situated on the Maritsa River with the iconic Meric Bridge forming the stunning twelve arches beneath. Between 1369 and 1453, Edirne was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The city is home to a profound cultural and historical development, as portrayed by the many antiques and artifacts found in the various museums in Edirne.
The heart of the city holds the Selimiye Mosque, which was built in the sixteenth century by the famous architect Mimar Sinan. The grand mosque is complete with a vast dome as well as four tall and attractive minarets and is considered to be an Ottoman classic. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Edirne and one of the major tourist attractions, as well. Inside the mosque, there are religious artifacts and ethnographical exhibitions dating back into the Ottoman times, displayed in the Turkish and Islamic Art Museum.
Another iconic mosque that stands nearby is the Uc Serefeli Mosque that was constructed in the fifteenth century and stands beautiful with three observatory balconies on one of its minarets.
The Old Mosque, built in the early fifteenth century, is another iconic architecture that is attractive and stunning complete with nine domes and two outstanding minarets. It is even more beautiful in the sizeable Arabic calligraphy inscriptions on its walls.
The early twentieth-century Great Synagogue is now newly opened and renovated and is located to the south of Edirne, and makes another attraction spot in the city.
On the other side of the Tundhza River, stands the iconic Sultan Beyazit II Mosque complex. The complex is home to the Museum of Health that holds the deep history of Islamic medicine as seen within the former psychiatric hospital that was built in the fifteenth century.
To the northern side of Edirne, there is another beautiful spot that features the stone remains and ruins of the Edirne Palace. The Edirne Palace dates back to when the city was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Tourists and locals visit this spot to learn more about the history and development of Edirne.
