Izmir is a beautiful, ancient coastal city in Turkey that is located along the Aegean coast. It is one of the most populated cities in Turkey as well as one of the most extensive metropolitan areas on the Aegean Sea. Izmir has a beautiful location on the western end of Anatolia, extending into the Gulf of Izmir, to the far northern Gediz River delta, into the alluvial plain in the east, and to the rugged southern terrains.
Izmir, which is also referred to as Smyrna in classical antiquity, has a deep political history and cultural development that has been safely preserved away in numerous museums and archaeological sites across the city.
Izmir has been ruled by the Greeks, Romans, rebuilt by Alexander the Great, and also governed by the Ottoman Empire. The extensive political history can be found in the Roman Agora of Smyrna, as well as in the Velvet Castle of Kadifekale up the hill.
Some of the tourist attraction spots in Izmir are Hisar Mosque that was built in the 1500s, Konak Square with its intricate buildings designs and the iconic clock tower, the Church of St. Polycarp that is now a beautiful mural and the vast Kordon waterfront promenade complete with outdoor eating joints and bars.

When to visit Izmir

Izmir experiences a Mediterranean climate that is Köppen classified as Csa. The weather is majorly characteristic of summers that are long, hot, and dry and winters that are mildly cool but rainy. The other seasons also receive rainfall, albeit in moderately small amounts. Snowfall during winter is rare, but occasionally Izmir experiences light snowfall of short periods amounting to hours as opposed to days.
During winter, from mid-November to mid-March, Izmir has mildly cold days and chilly nights. Daily temperature readings range between highs of 12.5°C (54.5°F) and 14.1°C (57.4°F) and lows of 5.5°C (41.9°F) and 7.5°C (45.5°F). The highest rainfall in Izmir is received during winter, averaging 121.1mm (4.8") per month across an average of eleven and a half rainfall days per month. Luckily, there are up to four and a half sunshine hours per day to warm up the winter chill considerably.
Spring in Izmir is mild and has lovely weather. The temperature ranges between lows of 12.5°C (54.5°F) and highs of 21.3°C (70.3°F), and couples up with up to seven hours of sunshine to make Izmir warm and pleasant. Generally, the pleasantness of spring is as a result of the fresh and scented air emanating from the beautiful spring blossoms.
Summer kicks in from May and ends in September. The weather is warm to hot, with the mercury sticking to highs of between 26.3°C (79.3°F) and 33.5°C (92.3°F) and lows of between 15.5°C (59.9°F) and 22.5°C (72.5°F) at night. The summer humidity averages 55.5%, and there are up to twelve hours of sunshine. Minimal rainfall showers in the afternoons help to keep the days' heat under tolerable limits. Autumn, too, is lovely and pleasant throughout and Izmir looks glorious with the golden-brown illumination hanging over the city during the fall.
The period from spring through summer is the peak of tourism in Izmir, because of the warm and pleasant temperature ranges. Also, this period is moderately dry and allows for a perfect tour of Izmir with minimal weather interruptions.
Some of the most commonly attended events in Izmir are the International Izmir Festival from June to July and the Izmir International Fair between August and September.
